It is also important to remember that treatments are available and that early intervention will help to avoid any long-term issues or complications.<sup>1<\/sup><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-electviolet-color has-text-color\">Children diagnosed with thyroid problems need the support of their families to ensure they take their medication regularly and understand their condition. It is also recommended that schools\/nurseries are informed so that they are aware of the child\u2019s diagnosis and medication requirements.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Meet Hypo and Hyper, the Thyroid Butterflies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to spot the symptoms associated with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, think of them as butterflies, each with a different personality: Hypo (short for hypothyroidism) and Hyper (short for hyperthyroidism).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meet Hypo, the slow and sluggish butterfly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full img-responsive\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.thyroidaware.com\/za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2022\/04\/hypo-gif.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-881\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hypo is a blue butterfly. He is slow moving compared with his friends and not growing as fast. He is often tired and sometimes sluggish. His skin is cold and his heart rate is slower than that of other butterflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meet Hyper, the highly active and restless&nbsp;butterfly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full img-responsive\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.thyroidaware.com\/za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2022\/04\/hyper-gif.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-883\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hyper is a thin, overly active, fidgety pink butterfly. She is irritable and easily upset. She is often hungry and eats a lot, but is still losing weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Could my baby experience thyroid problems?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children can experience thyroid problems from birth as they can be born without a properly working thyroid gland, a condition called congenital hypothyroidism.<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;This condition can be difficult to spot at birth as babies may not have any symptoms, or may only display mild symptoms that often go unrecognized.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What should I look for?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical symptoms of congenital hypothyroidism include:<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prolonged jaundice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive sleeping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor feeding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor muscle tone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constipation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cold extremities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large img-responsive\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.thyroidaware.com\/za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2022\/04\/thyroid-kids-1-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-888\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.thyroidaware.com\/za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2022\/04\/thyroid-kids-1-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www2.thyroidaware.com\/za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2022\/04\/thyroid-kids-1-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www2.thyroidaware.com\/za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2022\/04\/thyroid-kids-1-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www2.thyroidaware.com\/za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2022\/04\/thyroid-kids-1.jpg 1060w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid the more serious effects of untreated congenital hypothyroidism \u2013 including impaired brain development \u2013 screening for every baby is recommended soon after birth. The appropriate medication for hypothyroidism in adults are also recommended for use in children. Graves\u2019 disease tends to be more common in teenagers than toddlers, and generally affects more girls than boys.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graves\u2019 disease in children can often be difficult to identify because it develops slowly. However, there are common signs and symptoms to be aware of.
